@card

I am the deck, one card at a time. Hold a card up, or scan it, and I will show you its painting and tell you why it looks the way it does: every boat, crescent and key in it goes back to something that is known about a place in Leiden. Forty-eight cards so far, from The Moon.

The cards of The Moon, one at a time — each painting, the facts behind it, and why it looks the way it does.

Come and Look

A house of prayer that keeps its door open to anyone who wants to look inside.

Card 46 of 48 · The Moon · Leiden

Why this image

The arched door of a house of prayer stands open at dusk with warm light inside, and on the step outside many pairs of shoes, of every size and style, from children's slippers to boots, stand side by side. The Imam Malik centre gives guided tours to anyone who wants to know more about Islam and about what happens in a mosque 1, and calls itself 'more than a place for prayer', a meeting place where everyone is welcome 2. Al Hijra, too, is a place where people learn, ask and look around 3. Not painted, but the same open door: the university's Leiden Islam Academy is aimed at people outside the university 4.

onderwijs en rondleidingen

The centre offers accessible teaching to children, men and women of every age, on language and on the fundamentals of the faith, with lessons in Dutch as well as Arabic. It is also a place for courses, health training, meetings and discussions, and it gives guided tours to anyone who wants to know more about Islam and about what happens in a mosque.

meer dan een gebedsplek

The centre describes itself as 'more than a place for prayer; it is a lively meeting place for the whole community', with 'respect for one another and genuine engagement'. It wants 'a close and diverse community where everyone is welcome'. The mosque was founded by and for the Moroccan community, but that is not how it describes itself.

wat het centrum doet

Besides the prayers the centre offers teaching, lectures, consultations with the imam, a library and guided tours. It is therefore not only a prayer space but a place where people learn, ask and look around.
