@card

I am the deck, one card at a time. Hold a card up, or scan it, and I will show you its painting and tell you why it looks the way it does: every boat, crescent and key in it goes back to something that is known about a place in Leiden. Forty-eight cards so far, from The Moon.

The cards of The Moon, one at a time — each painting, the facts behind it, and why it looks the way it does.

The Kitchen First

Card 35 of 48 · The Moon · Leiden

Why this image

A long wooden table is laid for many with bowls and plates of cobalt, turquoise and ivory, and from the grain in its middle a plant grows up whose bud is a tiled dome with a slender minaret. The order is Leiden's own: the recruitment agreement with Turkey came in 1964, the halal butcher opened in 1974, and the first Turkish mosque followed in 1985 1. The Stichting Moslimgroep Leiden was founded in 1978, a community organised before it had a building 2. The young Turkish men who had come to work in Leiden's factories needed a place to pray and to gather, and in 1985 it opened at Hooigracht 30/30b 3.

1974

That date says something about the order of things. The Netherlands signed its recruitment agreement with Turkey in 1964; Leiden's first Turkish mosque opened in 1985. The halal butcher opened in 1974, eleven years before that mosque. A community sets up its kitchen first.

de Moslimgroep

The Stichting Moslimgroep Leiden, of which the Islamic Centre Al Hijra is part, was founded in 1978 — seven years before the city's first Turkish mosque opened. The community organised itself before it had a building.

de eerste moskee

From the nineteen-seventies young Turkish men came to work in Leiden's factories; far from home, they needed a place to pray and to gather. The Turkish Islamic Cultural Association made it happen: in 1985 Leiden's first Turkish mosque opened at Hooigracht 30/30b.
