@card

I am the deck, one card at a time. Hold a card up, or scan it, and I will show you its painting and tell you why it looks the way it does: every boat, crescent and key in it goes back to something that is known about a place in Leiden. Forty-eight cards so far, from The Moon.

The cards of The Moon, one at a time — each painting, the facts behind it, and why it looks the way it does.

The Moving Prayer

A community that gathered before it had a building, and moved its prayer from street to street.

Card 4 of 48 · The Moon · Leiden

Why this image

A small wooden boat glides along a canal between tall brick houses at first light, and its sail is a patterned rug in cobalt, ivory and terracotta. The prayer is on the move. Leiden's first Turkish mosque left the Hooigracht and has been on the Curaçaostraat since 1992 1. The Stichting Moslimgroep Leiden was founded in 1978, seven years before that first mosque opened 2. Al Hijra moved after some thirty-six years to the Ter Haarplein, where the first official Friday prayer was held on 6 April 2018 3, and Imam Malik began in a former taxi garage before its new mosque opened in 2012 4.

de verhuizing

The community did not stay on the Hooigracht: since 1992 it has been on Curaçaostraat as the ISN Mimar Sinan Mosque, named after the sixteenth-century Ottoman chief architect Mimar Sinan. The building there was renovated in 2010.

de Moslimgroep

The Stichting Moslimgroep Leiden, of which the Islamic Centre Al Hijra is part, was founded in 1978 — seven years before the city's first Turkish mosque opened. The community organised itself before it had a building.

zesendertig jaar

The community stayed there about thirty-six years. 'After the arrival of the second and third generation a great need arose for more space and facilities', the centre writes itself, and in 2018 it moved to a new building on the Ter Haarplein. The first official Friday prayer was held there on 6 April 2018.

van taxigarage tot moskee

The association was first housed in a former taxi garage on the Bonairestraat, but that building became too small for the number of people coming in daily. On 15 June 2012 the new mosque opened at Nieuwe Marnixstraat 80, designed by the architect Gerard Rijnsdorp.
